The year in review: Key ER/IR 2019 decisions affecting the Victorian Public Sector

The Workplace Relations and Occupational Safety Branch of the Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office invites you to a seminar which will provide you with a useful summary of the key ER/IR 2019 decisions affecting the Victorian Public Sector. 
 
During this session, we will discuss the practical implications of these decisions for legal, human resources and employee relations professionals working in the Victorian Public Sector.
 
We will also analyse the trends that will be prevalent in 2020 and distil what you need to know for the year ahead.
 
Topics (and relevant cases) to be covered in this seminar include:
 
  • Freedom of speech, religious protections, political communications and the VPS Code of Conduct (eg Comcare v Banerji and Israel Folau v Rugby Australia)
  • Privacy and employers’ use of biometric data (eg Lee v Superior Wood Pty Ltd)
  • What does casual and fixed term employment mean (eg WorkPac Pty Ltd v Skene and Mr Saeid Khayam v Navitas English Pty Ltd)

Frances Anderson
Frances leads VGSO’s Workplace Relations and Occupational Safety team. She has 30 years of workplace relations experience, both in law firms and in-house and across multiple business sectors. She has particular expertise in workplace change and restructure and in advising on and managing employment-related risks in organisations with heightened political and industrial sensitivities.

Rebecca Best
Rebecca is a Managing Principal Solicitor with over ten years experience in both private and public sectors. She has particular expertise in employment obligations, termination of employment and redundancy, occupational health and safety matters and workplace investigations. 
 
Alice Felman
Alice is a Principal Solicitor with experience advising and representing public sector clients on all aspects of workplace relations law including equal opportunity, misconduct and performance management, termination of employment, industrial relations, organisational policies and OHS.
 
Ronan O'Donnell
Ronan is a Senior Solicitor practicing in employment law, industrial relations, occupational health and safety and anti-discrimination. In addition to advisory work, Ronan conducts litigation in jurisdictions including the Fair Work Commission, VCAT and State and Federal Courts.
 
Melissa Small
Melissa is a Solicitor who completed VGSO’s Graduate Program in 2017. Since then she has gained experience in a variety of Victorian public sector employment matters including in the areas of occupational health and safety, equal opportunity and anti-discrimination and general industrial relations.
