Alison O'Brien, Assistant Victorian Government Solicitor, has been named in the Eighth Edition of The Best Lawyers in Australia in the Government Practice and Public Law categories.

The publication released its results last week and largely focuses on private sector lawyers and members of the Bar.

Alison O'Brien is the only government lawyer recognised in the current Australian edition, and the first lawyer from the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office to make the list. The listing is compiled via nomination by peers from across the private sector and Bar community.

Speaking on the result Victorian Government Solicitor, Peter Stewart commented 'Alison is an outstanding public lawyer. While this is well known within government, I am delighted that her expertise and experience has been recognised publicly in this way. There is no doubt that she is one of the very best government lawyers in the country. Her recognition is well deserved'.

Alison has recently led teams advising the Victorian Government on key matters of public importance including responding to Victorian constitutional litigation and assisting on the State's response to, and establishment of, a number of royal commissions and inquiries.

Alison has 19 years' experience working in government, including 17 years at the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office.

Alison commented 'it's a real compliment for the private sector to acknowledge the great work government lawyers do for government, in government - which is often done behind the scenes'.

In her current role she leads a team of 40 lawyers in the Government and Public Law Branch of the VGSO which advises government bodies on the exercise of their powers, particularly in relation to their regulatory functions. It also advises on matters relating to the relationship between - and the accountability of - the different arms and levels of government, and on the development of legislation.

In 2011, Alison was awarded the Law Institute of Victoria Government Lawyer of the Year Award.
