    Victoria Police Service Medal for VGSO Solicitor

    Today,  Senior Solicitor Greg Elms attended a ceremony at the Police Academy and was awarded the 15 year clasp to the Victoria Police Service Medal.  The Medal is recognition by the Chief Commissioner of the sustained diligent and ethical service of employees to Victoria Police. It is earned through honest hard work, dedication to duty and professionalism during an employee’s career.Greg served in the Victorian Police Force for 16 years, including eight years in prosecutions, where he began his legal studies, and three years with the Discipline Advisory Unit within the Ethical Standards Department (ESD). After his degree, Greg spent a year in East Timor as an Army Reservist. He joined the VGSO Victoria Police Branch in 2009.Congratulations, Greg!

    VGSO Key Player in Major Native Title Rights Claim

    On October 22 2010 the Federal Court of Australia made a determination, by consent, recognising the native title rights of the Gunaikurnai People over their traditional land and waters in Gippsland. The mediated resolution of this claim involved a whole-of-government response to the land justice aspirations of the Gunaikurnai.  Along with several government departments, the VGSO played a key role in this successful claims resolution.

    Focus on Women in Government

    The VGSO is sponsoring the launch of Women in Government (WiG), which will form part of Victorian Women Lawyers. The new Group will meet regularly and organise both professional development and social networking events. Speakers at the launch include Astrid Haban-Beer, Convenor, WiG and (former) Victorian Government Solicitor John Cain. Her Honour Justice Karin Emerton of the Supreme Court will deliver the keynote address.

    VGSO establishes Workplace Relations & Regulatory Compliance Branch

    The Victorian Government Solicitor's Office has appointed Assistant Victorian Government Solicitor, Hayley Petrony, to lead its newly-established Workplace Relations and Regulatory Compliance Branch. The Branch consists of experienced practitioners who tailor practical solutions to the specific workplace environment in which Government is placed and advises on all aspects of workplace relations, equal opportunity (anti-discrimination), disciplinary and occupational health & safety law.

    Legalwise Seminar July 2010 - Managing Government Contracts and Remedies for Breach

    Author: Sue Nolen, Assistant Victorian Government Solicitor. This paper considers a number of legal issues and case law relevant to government contracts. It also deals with practical aspects such as drafting contracts to give effective remedies to a government party, and managing the contract to avoid compromising government's legal rights.
