Current practice

Nicholas's practice includes litigation and advisory work in constitutional law and judicial review of administrative decision-making.  Nicholas also advises government clients on complex questions of statutory interpretation, and executive and parliamentary powers and privileges.

Nicholas has conducted litigation in the County, Supreme, Federal and High Courts and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.  He has also assisted in the conduct of litigation in the High Court of England and Wales, and in arbitral proceedings before the International Court of Arbitration.


Nicholas joined the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office as a Senior Solicitor in 2019.

Nicholas was previously a litigation lawyer at a major international commercial law firm. In that role, he acted for clients in disputes and litigation across industries in Australia, Europe and the USA, including contractual disputes, breach of confidence claims, shareholder disputes and competition and consumer law matters (such as claims relating to misleading and deceptive conduct).

Prior to that, Nicholas was associate to the Honourable Justice McMillan of the Supreme Court of Victoria. Nicholas assisted her Honour as a Judge of the Common Law Division, Acting Judge of the Court of Appeal, and Judge in Charge of the Trusts, Equity and Probate List and the Testator's Family Maintenance List.

Nicholas has a Juris Doctor (law) and a Bachelor of Arts (history, politics and economics) from the University of Melbourne. Nicholas ranked first in his cohort in Contracts, Obligations and Torts. Whilst at university, Nicholas won the national Michael Kirby Contract Law Moot, the international IASLA Space Law Moot, and the university's negotiation competition. Nicholas was also runner-up in the national Administrative Appeals Tribunal Moot.
